With all of the coverage about the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001, I have been going back and forth on whether or not I wanted to write something about it. As I was cleaning out my desk recently, I came across this Mrs. Grossman’s bumper sticker that I purchased a few weeks after 9-11 happened. It says “We will never forget September 11, 2001.”
It’s incredible to believe that 10 years has passed already since that day when many of our worlds changed. We feel for the ones who were directly impacted by all of the events on 9-11 and especially all they have had to go through in the past 10 years. We did not know anyone personally who had perished that day but through the coverage following 9-11, I began to feel like I knew some of those people as I heard their families and friends talk about them.
I remember that I happened to be home that morning because the office where I was working in at the time was being renovated so some of us were working from home while the renovations were being done. My cousin and her friend had both come in from different parts of the country to visit me and my husband and all of them were home with me that morning when I turned on the Today Show only to see what was happening. It was unbelievable the sights we were seeing. We all were pretty numb after that. My cousin’s friend was working for United Airlines at the time and she needed to get back home and back to work, but because all the flights were grounded right after it happened, she had a hard time making it back home, but eventually did find a way back. I watched the coverage the following weeks and was brought to tears many times as I watched the families share their stories of loved ones.
My life has changed a lot in the 10 years since it all happened. I now have four children of my own and have changed my career path. What I remember most about the feelings after 9-11 was a sense that you should appreciate every day because you don’t know what may happen tomorrow, a sense of gratitude for those who survived, and a sense of community for those trying to bring people together. What’s different for me about this anniversary is having my children ask me, “Mommy what happened on 9-11?” They are still young, but as schoolchildren, are now learning about it. It’s interesting to think that this will be a part of their histories and that future generations will be learning about it as a history lesson. At first, I didn’t know what to tell them or how to tell them, but I tried my best to put it in a way that they could understand and explain to them why so many people are talking about it right now.
I woke up today wanting to give my children the biggest hugs ever – appreciating the fact that they are in my life and very much appreciating the fact that I can be in there lives. I also woke up recommitting myself to doing some good in this world so that the bad events of that day and the loss many suffered wouldn’t be in vain. If we can all take a moment and strive to do some good, we can make the world a better place for the future generations.
Whatever way you are spending this day, we hope it brings you peace and happiness.

Hello,
It’s so true about being amazed at how time has flown. TEEEENNN YYYYEEEAAARRRSSS. For some reason I have to say it like that. I’ve got two little ones, the eldest being 4 and we haven’t talked much about it, but I know the time will come and we’re going to have to have those conversations. I’m trying to ready myself. 🙂
