Breast Cancer Awareness and How You Can Make A Difference

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Valpak. All opinions are my own, honest opinions. #Pak4ACure

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. It is a shocking statistic and one that we are all too familiar with in our family.

We have women on both sides of our family who have had breast cancer, from our cousins to our aunts. We have seen how it can happen to anyone – young or old. We even had to deal with a scare when I needed further testing after a mammogram. Luckily, it was not breast cancer. All different scenarios went through my head while I waited for the results. I can only imagine what those that are diagnosed with breast cancer must think or feel when their lives are turned upside down. Because our families have a history of cancer, we are more acutely aware of the risks of getting cancer. It becomes the question that is asked whenever you see a new doctor when it comes to your medical history. We are also aware that is now something our kids will have to think about as they get older.

What we have seen from those family members who have had their breast cancer diagnosed early or diagnosed more recently is that they have been able to survive with the treatment options that are now more readily available. It is a testament to the continued research that is being done to help find ways to cure breast cancer. It is also a testament to how early detection is being encouraged.

The Susan G. Komen foundation’s mission is to save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. There are many ways in which the Susan G. Komen foundation has helped those battling breast cancer. Their bold goal is to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026.

There are many ways we can get involved to help them meet that goal.

* Make a donation. It’s easy to do and will only take you a few minutes.

* Participate in a Race for the Cure. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series is the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer ever created. The series of 5K runs and fitness walks raises significant funds and awareness for the breast cancer movement, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. The Komen Race Series welcomes people of all ages and fitness levels, from walkers to elite runners.

* Participate in a More Than Pink Walk. The More Than Pink Walk will no longer have a run element.

* Participate in a Komen 3-Day event. This is a three-day, 60-mile walk that’s making a real difference in the fight against breast cancer. In 2016, Susan G. Komen® announced a Bold Goal—to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026. That’s why we walk, and why we raise money—to make that goal a reality.

* SAVE $5 WHEN YOU USE THE CODE DealPro DURING REGISTRATION FOR THE RACE EVENTS *

When you participate, donate, or volunteer, you help accomplish this:

5 Easy Cleaning Tips for Your New Year’s Cleaning Resolution

This New Year cleaning resolution tips post is brought to you by Mr. Clean as part of a Type-A Parent Community Sponsored Post.

@RealMrClean #LiquidMuscle

[tweetherder]Get some #NewYears cleaning tips with us and @RealMrClean! #Liquidmuscle #ad[/tweetherder]

One main goal for our household in 2014 is to somehow keep our house clean with all of our busy schedules. We know that for some of you, this may also be a resolution for the new year, so we’d love to share with you 5 easy cleaning tips to make it more of a reality:

1. Take just 15 minutes of your day and pick one area to do a quick clean. Set the timer and see how much you can accomplish. You can either create a schedule for which area you will cover on which days or have some fun with it. With our kids, we are going to have them pick out slips of paper from a jar that will be their responsibility to clean for the day.

2. We like to use cleaning products that are portable and versatile. For example, the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser comes in a variety of sizes, including a select-a-size version and you can use it on various surfaces. It’s even easy enough for our children to use.

3. Use a cleaner that has a refreshing scent to it, like Febreze, so that you can kill two birds with one stone. You’ll have a clean space, and it will smell nice and fresh!

4. You can use a big vacuum for intensive cleaning when needed. We love our Dyson, especially when we do a deep clean. However, for everyday cleaning and maintenance, using a portable or handheld vacuum makes it easier to accomplish. Our 6-year old daughter is even able to help us out because it’s not too heavy for her to use.

5. If you have multiple levels to clean, keep a set of cleaning products, like Mr. Clean’s Liquid Muscle Liquid Gel. You can use it on a variety of surfaces and depending on what you are cleaning, you can either dilute it or use the full strength directly on a sponge. Here’s me cleaning our bathroom sink with it:

We Used the Walmart Family Mobile Plan to Cut Our Cell Phone Bills

Disclosure: I am a member of the Collective Bias® Social Fabric® Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias and their client.

[tweetherder]We used the Walmart Family Mobile Plan to save money! #FamilyMobileSaves #shop #cbias[/tweetherder]

Walmart Money Savers II #shop 19

This past month, Jim and I have been trying out the Walmart Family Mobile program with its unlimited text, talk, and web plan to see if it would be a good option to use with our kids as they are now getting to the age of wanting a cell phone. We also wanted to compare it with how it stacks up against our traditional cell phone plan, since they are both powered by T-Mobile.

In our post, “Looking for Ways to Cut Your Cell Phone Costs with Unlimited Plans?,” we shared how we went about purchasing and getting set up on the Walmart Family Mobile program. It was a very easy process to get started. After a month of using this program, here’s what we’ve found:

    – The cost of the Walmart Family Mobile program with unlimited text, talk, and web is $39.88 versus the approximately $65.00 per line contract plan that we have now. Over the year, it would add up to big savings for our family.

Walmart Money Savers II #shop 6

    – We have had no problems with getting service using Walmart Family Mobile program. It’s worked well for us in our home, visiting friends/family, in restaurants, and on the road.

    – Jim was able to use the SIM card on his Samsung Galaxy SIII with no problem. He ran a Speed Test with the SIM card in his SIII and compared the results to my Samsung Galaxy SIII, which is on a traditional T-Mobile contract plan of unlimited text, talk, and web. I was surprised to find that the Walmart Family Mobile plan actually had some better results than our traditional T-Mobile plan when we used Wi-Fi. As you can see in the photo below, the results showed the Walmart program had 21094 kbps vs 16604 kbps on the T-Mobile program for download speeds and the Walmart program had 11909 kbps vs 12286 kbps on the T-Mobile program for upload speeds.

Walmart Money Savers II #shop 17

    – We did see a bit of a bigger difference in speeds when the connection was over the air versus Wi-Fi. As you can see in the photo below, the results showed the Walmart program had 914 kbps vs 4112 kbps on the T-Mobile program for download speeds and the Walmart program had 772 kbps vs 511 kbps on the T-Mobile program for upload speeds.

Walmart Money Savers II #shop 18

It just depends on what you are looking for as far as features of a cell phone program whether this one is right for you. We have been pleased with our experience with the Walmart Family Mobile program so far. One of the biggest conveniences is having online account management and information. It can be a true budget saver for families because you know upfront what the monthly cost will be and if you decide it is not for you, you have the ability to stop the plan when you are done, instead of waiting for a contract to end or having to pay a huge penalty to end a contract.

We think it’s definitely a good way when having your kids start off with their own cell phone to be able to manage their cell phone costs by having a plan such as the Walmart Family Mobile program.

What other ways have you cut your cell phone bills? Let us know by leaving a comment.
