Using coupons may initially seem intimidating, but using the following tips will help you save money on your grocery shopping so you can use it for more important things in life!

1. Get organized. Start off with a shopping list. Next, find a way to organize your coupons that work for you.

2. Sign up for your store’s loyalty program (if they have one). Most of the time you can save 50% or more just by using the loyalty card when checking out (before coupons). You may also earn rewards from your purchases. For example,

3. Check your store ads or search online for grocery store ad matchups BEFORE heading to the store. See if your store will do price matching so you can save on gas.

4. Know how much you need! Look over your recipes and determine how much to stock up on – it’s not saving money if you end up throwing out a bunch of groceries because they have gone bad. Also, stock up on the non-perishable items while they are on sale.

5. Look for coupons throughout the store in the blinkie machines, on the products themselves, or even in coupon booklets in the store.

Before we started couponing consistently, it was easy for us to go into a store and leave spending a lot more than we intended. Mainly it was because we didn’t go in with a set shopping list or a set goal in mind, so if we came across something we thought was cool, we would through it into the cart, even if we didn’t have a coupon or deal for it. Needless to say, when you do that often enough, your budget gets blown out of the water.

Nowadays, we are more aware of how much we can save just by being organized and creating a shopping list, along with having coupons in hand, before heading out to the store!

Here are some ways you can organize your shopping list.

1. Use the tried-and-true paper-and-pen method. Writing it down is the best way to keep track of what you need to shop for and what coupons you plan to use. Many people use a small notebook that fits in a purse or pocket.

2. Find a printable template, such as the shopping list from Organized Home. There are other sites that offer free printable shopping lists and you can find one that suits your needs.

3. You can also use the “Coupon List” function in A Savings WOW!’s grocery store matchups to add items, along with the list of coupons to a coupon list that can be printed or emailed.

4. Try out the free Ziplist.com app. You can add what you need to purchase and even organize it based on the stores you plan to purchase the items. You can also categorize the items, making it easier to find them in the store. There’s even a notes section so you can add the coupons you plan to use (so you don’t forget them). The best thing about this app is that you can email or text the list to someone else, especially if you share the shopping duties with someone else. Since it is updated instantaneously, you won’t have to worry about both of you buying the same thing.

5. You can also create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. By adding formulas, you can have it calculate what the the total is before coupons and what it is after coupons. This way, you can tell fairly quickly if anything is rung up incorrectly because you know what to expect to pay at checkout.

There are a variety different ways to organize your coupons and we’ve tried many of them – envelopes, Ziploc bags, file boxes, purses, wallets, pockets, and binders. We’ve finally found a system that works for us and we’d love to share with you how we keep our coupons organized!

1. We don’t clip every coupon out. We use the Coupon Database to search for coupons for items on our shopping list. We also use store sale matchups to determine which coupons we will use.

2. We file coupons we know we will use, along with printable and loose coupons, in our Couponizer. This is what we use on a daily basis to transport our coupons while shopping. It has everything we need to keep organized while shopping – shopping list, a place to hold coupons until we’re ready to checkout, scissors, and a place to store gift cards and loyalty cards.

3. We use an expandable file to organize our Sunday newspaper coupon inserts. We file them by the week they came out, making it easier to find the coupons from the Coupon Database and from matchups.

4. We have coupons texted or emailed to us so that it’s less paper to file. Depending on what type of plan you have, make sure what the text charges will be before setting up coupons sent via text.

5. We also have coupons loaded on our store loyalty cards if it’s available. Many times you combine the store coupons with manufacturer’s coupons, so it’s extra savings. You will also usually save at least 50% by using your store loyalty cards on your purchases, so it’s a win-win situation!
