You may notice that we, along with some other sites, including Wikipedia, will be going black tomorrow to protest the possible SOPA and PIPA bills, which would greatly limit what can be done on the internet, and especially directly affect what we do and what we provide for you. You will see more information on our site tomorrow if you visit.

Thank you for your support and understanding!

Boost Your Budget Pantry Challenge

We’re excited to have you join us in the Boost Your Budget Pantry Challenge series that we are participating in and posting about throughout the month of January!  The Challenge is being co-hosted by us, Shopper StrategyGoing Crazy Wanna Go?The Frugalista ChickMatter of CentsCoupon PalsThrifty DivasFrugal Mom of TwoHow About FreeTheItMom.comAll The World Is ArtSweeping The USAMommies Point of ViewMama’s Money TreeCrunchy FrugalistaFab Find FoodieMaking Time For MommyAdventures in CouponsFull Price? NEVER!The Frugal Navy Wife, and Generations of Savings.

What is the Boost Your Budget Pantry Challenge?  This January we, along with our other co-hosts, will challenge ourselves by eating from our pantries and stockpiles.  This is not a “no spend” month, this is a “make do with what you have on hand and spend as little as possible” month.  Since everybody’s goals are different and will depend on their own household needs, we can each set our own rules.  The point is to start off the new year by boosting our budgets using what we already have!

Our goal last week is to go through our pantry and stockpile to determine what we have and what types of things we still need in order to prepare the meals for our family this month. We also planned on finding more recipes that will appeal to our household of six so we won’t have to eat out as much. Overall, we hope to “boost our budget” by spending no more than $200 this month on grocery and expenses from eating out in January.

    UPDATE:

We continued to eat most of our meals out of our pantry this week and found that we are able to do a lot with what we have, especially pasta. Also, we made meal portions that could last for at least 2 meals. We were also able to stay within our $50 budget this week for groceries because of a great sale on some frozen food. What are your goals for the pantry challenge this week?

We’re also giving away a $25 Coupon Clutch gift certificate each week to one participant who either leaves a link to a challenge update post. Last week’s winner is Pary Moppins. Will you join us?

    UPDATE:

We did well this past week with eating from our pantry. We took stock of our inventory and found that we had a lot to work with, and also, because of the holiday parties, we had some leftovers to eat, all of which did not cost us anything out of pocket this week. We spent about $25 on groceries, mainly stocking up on beverages and breakfast items. We only ate out once this week and used the Chili’s “Kids Eat Free” coupons, so we only paid for the adult meals, and it came out to only $25. This week our goal is to continue to eat out of the pantry and try a new recipe or two using what we have in our pantry. What are your goals for the pantry challenge this week?

We’re also co-hosting a #CookingandCoupons Twitter Party tomorrow with Momma Cuisine where we’ll be talking about using coupons to save money on the groceries you purchase to make great everyday meals for your family! Make sure to RSVP for your chance to win prizes during our Twitter Party!

We’re also giving away a $25 Coupon Clutch gift certificate each week to one participant who either leaves a link to a challenge update post. Last week’s winner is Angela from The Testosterone Palace. Will you join us?

2011 Secret Santa Challenge – Gift Ideas For Under $15

We joined some of our fellow Savings.com DealPros for a Secret Santa Challenge. We thought, what better way to show our readers how to stretch a buck during the holidays than to do it ourselves and share the results! We used Elfster to draw names randomly and secretly. It’s a free service and gives you the ability to create wish lists and ask your gift recipient questions without revealing your identity. It was fun learning who was randomly selected as our gift recipients.

Our maximum out-of-pocket budget was $15 (before shipping). We were allowed to use credits we earned through referrals on daily deal sites or through programs such as Swagbucks without it counting towards the budget. We could also make things or use freebies, as long as what we spent did not go over $15.

Gift To Smart Spending Spot

Our gift recipient was Lisa of Smart Spending Spot. We asked her about some of her likes, one of them about what she collected and it turns out that she collects Hallmark Ornaments. So, we were able to get her the 2011 Hallmark Ornament and saved $5 by using the $5 off $10 purchase printable coupon. By using our Hallmark Gold Crown rewards card, we also earned points with our purchase. The ornament came out to about $6.

We also included a beautiful wallet from Claire’s, which we found in the clearance section that cost only $2.50. We gave her a wallet with sections to hold money, coupons, and her business cards. The journal was $0.50 on clearance from Michael’s dollar section. We gave her the journal to help her keep track of her to-do lists and also to help her keep track of all the money she’ll be saving throughout the year. The Giftionizer we had received as part of a Couponizer package. We gave her a Giftionizer because as DealPros, we take advantage of hot deals that can be used for gift-giving throughout the year. The Giftionizer helps you keep track of birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions throughout the year, as well as keep track of the gifts you’ve already purchased. Overall, we spent about $13 out of pocket and were able to give her four gifts we hope will make her life a little easier!

Gift From Bargain Briana

We received this wonderful gift from our Secret Santa, Briana of Bargain Briana. She sent us a book with a cut-out (perfect to hide our candy stash from the kids), a Blue Avocado insulated bag (nice and roomy to fit our groceries in to replace up to 3 plastic bags), and a $10 iTunes gift card (we’ve been downloading karaoke songs for inexpensive family fun, so this will come in handy). Thanks for the thoughtful gift, Briana!

What are some gift ideas you have that are $15 and under?

Our Savings Story

Our savings story started over a decade ago when we got married. A couple of years later, we had our first child, then a year after that had a second child, then a year after that, had a third child, and then two years after that, had a fourth child. So, we had four children within five years. After our third child was born, we decided that it would be best for our family to have one of us stay at home with the kids, so we went from a two-income to a one-income family.

We’ve both always loved finding good deals and saving money, but were not very consistent when it came to doing it and couponing. Once we had our fourth child and realized that regular expenses were continuing to grow, we started couponing and deal-seeking regularly and found that we were saving a lot of money on our purchases. We also started sharing our savings techniques with friends and family, who started doing it also and loved saving money for themselves and their families.

We started A Savings WOW! to be able to share deals with our friends, family, and you! It is dedicated to helping you enjoy your life without breaking the bank by providing money-saving resources such as classes, coupons, deals, freebies, giveaways, and reviews. After you use the tools we give you, people will say to you “What a savings! WOW!” after you tell them how much you paid versus how much it should have been.

Our biggest enjoyment is finding great deals to entertain our kids. We especially enjoy taking them to free activities around the area and also getting free meals for them. It can be quite a cost savings for a family of six! We’ve also seen how our kids watching us be more conscious of our shopping decisions. They now understand that you can get more out of their money by looking for deals and using coupons. We hope that they will carry it with them so that they can become smart shoppers in the future.

Right now, Maria is at the Savings.com SaveUp event in New York City with our fellow DealPros. We invite you to read our fellow DealPros savings stories and see how there are many reasons why people start living a more frugal lifestyle!

Also at 2:15 PM this afternoon, there will be livestreaming from SaveUp where you will see a live couponing class, savings stories from the DealPros, and some Q&A. Plus, if you RSVP for the event, you will be entered to win an iPad from Savings.com!

Don’t forget to take the Savings Pledge if you haven’t done so yet and learn the smart way to control your spending and afford the things you want!

Be sure to check out our Savings.com database to find the online and offline deals that you want. You can also sign up for FREE at Savings.com to stay up-to-date with the newest deals and coupons available on Savings.com.
